Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art

PRC Meeting #3

November 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

(clockwise): Jane Peterman, Riko Takata, Avinger Nelson, Helen Poole Newman, Sue Ann Hillyer, Sandra Mueller, Gutfreund, Victoria Legg. Missing from picture: Niku Kashef, Susan Kraft, Priscilla Otani.

After a kickoff meeting at Helen’s house and a conference call in early November, the Pacific Regional Conference Committee met on Saturday at a cafe in Los Altos. We agreed with Helen’s recommendation to hold the Elements eco-art conference at the David Brower Center in Berkeley, CA. Although the specific flow of the one-day conference is still taking shape, the conference will involve panel discussions, organic meals, vendor fair, performance art, film and an awards ceremony honoring Pacific region heroines of eco-art.

Nearly every Pacific Region chapter is taking part in crafting this conference.  Committees have formed around Programs, Exhibitions, Publicity, Awards, Print Production, Registration and Sponsorship.  Right now we are in search of a venue in Berkeley or Oakland  for a juried show titled “Blue Planet,” covering issues around water. Please email Avinger Nelson at avingernelson@mac.com for any leads.  Progress in our conference-planning will be blogged here.

2009 Board Retreat at Dillon Beach

NCWCA had its Board retreat over the weekend of November 13 at Dillon Beach.  The beautiful off-site location was the perfect setting for uninterrupted discussions of business, and strategies. The retreat also gave us time to enjoy each other’s company, enjoy fine dining and make collaborative art. Cynthia Tom, President of Asian American Women Artists’ Association (AAWAA) and also NCWCA member joined us and gave us many useful tips. We discussed the need to attract more membership, find ways to collaborate with other organizations, do more exhibitions, obtain grants to improve our infrastructure and recruit from corporations to get a broader representation on our board. And of course we enjoyed ourselves taking long walks on the beach, sketching and playing  a wonderful round of “exquisite corpse” on Sunday. Each of us came away with a treasure of original art and a renewed sense of commitment to move our chapter forward.

Emergency Meeting of Our Chapter- Urgent, please Come to Meeting & Bryant Street Studio Tour

November 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear Members and interested Friends,

Plans are well under way for a great Eco-Art Conference for next June, here in the Bay Area. Five of the chapters in the Pacific Region of WCA have met and enthusiastically confirmed their support and willingness to work towards creating a wonderful and meaningful event together. Now we, NCWCA, need to meet right away to discuss our direct participation in it, and brainstorm ideas to enrich the Panels. Program planning is our chapter’s primary role, with Priscilla Otani as the Point person. We will begin to share our excitement about the conference, and claim the tasks involved in such a meaningful, collaborative project. Hopefully as many of our members as possible will attend.

Also, this meeting will be held in Cynthia Tom’s Bryant Street Studio, which is a treat to see. She will give a tour of her studio and work. Cynthia Tom’s studio, as well as the office and event space for AAWAA, (Asian AMerican Women Artists Association) are in the multi floor Bryant Street Studios shared by 45 creative businesses and Artists in SF. She is at heart a found object artist and a surrealist painter. Check out her web sites below, to begin to get an idea of some what you will be seeing.

NCWCA 2010 Membership Renewal

October 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear Artists,

It’s time to renew your NCWCA membership. Thank you for participating in 2009 and we look forward to your continued engagement in 2010. For artists who have let their memberships lapse, NCWCA offers a way for women to connect with other artists and art historians through workshops, art critiques, discussions about women in the arts and women’s art, conferences, gallery and museum visits and exhibition opportunities. In 2009 NCWCA members participated in painting workshops, art critiques, collaboration games, sketch groups, studio visits and National and Regional juried exhibitions.

During the 2009 National WCA mid-year board meeting in Minneapolis , an updated WCA Mission Statement was adopted as follows:

The Mission of the Women’s Caucus for Art is to create community through art, education and social activism. We are committed to:
• Recognizing the contributions of women in the arts.
• Providing women with leadership opportunities and professional development.
• Expanding networking and exhibition opportunities for women.
• Supporting local, national and global activism.
• Advocating for equity in the arts for all.

Two years ago, NCWCA decided as an organization to focus on art and activism. We are pleased that the restatement of the National WCA Mission Statement matches our chapter’s priorities. With art activism as the focus, we encourage women artists and art educators to express their perspectives on social justice and environmental issues through dialog, exhibitions and collaborations.

Our membership dues are:

* $60 for Regular Annual Membership ($40 National WCA/$20 NCWCA).
* $520 ($500 One-time Only Lifetime National plus $20 NCWCA to be paid annually)
* $20 for NCWCA (those who already are National Lifetime members)
* $95 for Institutional Membership ($75 National WCA/$20 NCWCA)
* $35 for Students/Limited Income ($25 National WCA/$10 NCWCA – attach copy of current student ID or letter explaining hardship)

We’ve made it easy to renew your NCWCA membership. Print the attached Membership form, fill it out, write a check to NCWCA and mail both to:

Priscilla Otani
NCWCA Co-Membership Chair
263 Laidley Street
San Francisco , CA 94131

If you renew now, your membership will be good through December 31, 2010 . Don’t wait – renew or rejoin now and become part of a dynamic community of women in the arts.

If you have any membership questions, please email Trudi Chamoff-Hauptman, Co-Membership Chair at truhand@aol.com or Priscilla Otani, Co-Membership Chair at mrpotani@yahoo.com.
